Overnight the news broke that President Donald Trump along with First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for COVID-19. This news follows yesterday’s revelation that his close advisor, Hope Hicks, also tested positive. I pray for each their speedy recovery back to health.
Consider the news a reminder to observe the most basic safety precautions of always wearing a mask, observe social distancing, and take it seriously, three things the president has resolutely refused to do. With more than 205,000 Americans now dead, and the number increasing daily, it remains as clear as it has ever been that this coronavirus is deadly. No amount of wishing and hoping that it will just wash through and be gone is realistic.
Trump’s diagnosis brings a host of questions: has VP Pence been exposed? What does this means for the VP debate? What does it mean for the next presidential debate? If the president’s case is bad and he is hospitalized, at what point does leadership fall to Pence? What if Trump is put on a ventilator? At what point might the 25th Amendment be in play? The latter are now potential realities even as we pray none of them come to pass.
